Les Halman Nurseries - New Technology

Since Fred Halman bought the first lorry used on a market garden in the south Manchester area in 1924 the family have invested in the latest technologies.
Tray filling machine
Originally all the work in producing garden plants was done by hand. In our case a team of ladies would work at benches pricking out seedlings into seed trays. For the most part this is a thing of the past and machines of various types now handle the majority of plants that we produce.

PC6Following a visit to the USA we purchased a tray filling machine and installed a simple but effective compost handling machine, with the use of conveyers this improved productivity dramatically.
PC9
Over the past three years we have been investing in the latest technology available to the industry. This includes two of the latest transplant machines available from Holland, a machine for direct sowing of alyssum and lobelia and also a potting machine for larger containers.
The introduction of this technology has resulted in significant improvements in the efficiency and output of the nursery. Using the direct sowing line, 3 operators can sow the same quantity of Lobelia or Alyssum in a day that would previously have needed a week and 7 operators to prick out. 3 people and the PC6 machine can do the work of 7 operators using a tray filler and roller conveyors.
